Study in Australia

High Commissioner’s message

I am pleased to introduce the seventh edition of Study in Australia 2010, the Australian High Commission’s annual guide for Indian students interested in pursuing further studies in Australia. Australia is a destination of choice for international students seeking a high-quality education and this Supplement is designed to outline the strengths of Australia’s education and training system for international students. This Supplement also provides Indian students and their families with authoritative advice about the advantages of studying in Australia and how to apply.

I hope it helps put in better perspective the recent negative media reporting on Indian students in Australia. The Australian Government is committed to delivering the highest-quality education system in the world and providing international students with every support they need while studying. We welcome tens of thousands of students from more than 190 countries every year.

Australia is a multicultural society and international students make an enormous contribution to its multicultural diversity, its academic life and to people-to-people linkages across the world.

India is Australia’s second-largest source of international students, with almost 100,000 Indian students currently studying in Australia. This is a strong indicator of the attractiveness of Australia as a study and research destination for Indian students.

I wish all Indian students success in their studies and careers.

Peter N. Varghese, Australian High Commissioner to India

Australia is proud of the quality of its education and training. In the past 10 years, more than 10 lakh students from overseas have studied in Australia. Students from all around the world have long made Australia their education destination. The end of year international student enrolment data 2009 reflects that 631,935 international students drawn from more than 217 different countries were undertaking an Australian qualification in Australia. These students chose an Australian education for a number of reasons: its reputation for excellence and world-wide recognition; the safety and stability of the Australian society; Australia’s enviable standard of living – one of the highest in the world; and Australia’s multicultural community which helps international students feel at home.

The number of Indian students studying in Australia has also grown rapidly over the past few years. The end of year Indian student enrolment data 2009 shows that 120,913 Indian students had enrolled to undertake an Australian qualification in 2009. India is now the second top-source country for Australia’s international education industry.
